At the University of Stuttgart, the SRCSB approaches the study of biological systems with the inherent aim to further a quantitative and kinetic understanding of biological signal processing, network-based decision-making and functionality, spanning all scales from molecules to entire organisms. This provides the foundation for a seamless integration of the technically oriented biosciences with the disciplines of systems theory and cybernetics, as well as theoretical and applied engineering.

The SRCSB can therefore position itself as a unique international player in the domains of synthetic biology, systems biology, and systems biomedicine. As such, the SRCSB plays a lead role in local, national and international networks and consortia that operate in these domains through research, development and training activities.
